How many times have you heard sayings like, “Opposites Attract” or “Good girls love bad boys”. All of my life, I have heard these sayings over and over again. These saying were used to give reasoning as to why what is good is drawn to what is bad. Despite my thoughts on these statements, I can whole heartedly agree that attraction is real. It is described as a quality that evokes desire or interest. Yet the wrong attractions are dangerous and in some cases deadly.
The wrong attraction can be different for everyone. For some persons it can be a relationship, an unhealthy addiction, or a toxic environment. It is those things that entices you and draws you in, yet deep down you know that it is all wrong. In most cases, this wrong attraction is sin. Now don’t get too afraid. Sin is just a word used to describe “missing the mark”. In other words, it is going off God’s course. I too have experienced being attracted to sin or taking a course that was in opposition to God. I mean haven’t we all? That boo thang, that alcohol, that juicy gossip story. James puts it a little something like this:
But each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.
~ James 1:14–15
This scripture discusses the way our desires lead to sin, but every desire began with attraction. For example, the thought of being successful looks attractive and as a result, it attracts people. This then births a desire for success. Now the desire in itself it not wrong, but the wrong attraction, once fulfilled will lead to the wrong desire and this inevitably leads to sin.
Thank God it does not end there. Being attracted to a situation does not mean that you have to take action. Simply put, attraction does not mean action. In this culture, there has been an erroneous teaching that persons are to act on their feelings. The thought pattern is that if you are attracted to it, then you must pursue without counting the cost. I can be attracted to drinking, however that does not mean that I should take action. As a matter of fact, once I’ve established that it is the wrong attraction, I should strive to shut it down immediately before it births into desire. Here me out! It is dangerous to allow your desires to run rampant. Shut. It. Down. You may be asking, “ How do I do such a thing?” Well….. The Word of God.
For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
~ Hebrews 4:12
In the example of being attracted to alcohol, I would meditate on a scripture such as, Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:8). By consistently meditating on scripture, undeniably this will destroy any attraction because the mind is being renewed daily. You are changing your thoughts about this situation. Next, I would pray in faith. I would ask God to take away the attraction and believe that it is done. Despite what you may feel, God answers prayers that are in His will. It is His will that we have godly desires, therefore without a doubt you can be confident and believe that this prayer is answered.
I’m not giving you some cliché system because I am a testimony that it works. Earlier I said that I was riddled with the wrong attractions. Before Christ, I partied, became a social drinker, and cussed like a sailor, just to name a few. These wrong attractions became full blown desires and for a while, it was intense. Yet God was more powerful than any attraction or desire. As I meditated on His word and sought Him, every desire that was not like Him dried up. I’ll admit at first I underestimated the power of God and thought it was impossible. In the end God proved me wrong. If it is one point I want you to walk away knowing, it is that God is more powerful than any wrong attraction or sin in your life. I do not care how it looks, how addicted, how deep you are in, the moment you decide to repent and let Jesus come in, God will change your desires and replace them with His own.
As always, I am here for you and praying for you.
Until Next Time…
Be Strong, Be Courageous, Serve God Wholeheartedly
