You sit down to pray, close your eyes, and thirty seconds in, your brain goes….“Wait… did I lock the car door? Did I turn the stove off? What am I even eating today?”

If you’ve ever wondered why you can’t focus when you pray, I’m here to tell you, you are not alone. I’ve been there more times than I can count. I want to tell you exactly why it happens and how to actually fix it.

Let me start by painting a picture of my early prayer life. I was living in an apartment with my family and privacy was hard to come by. Still, I was desperate to connect with God. Many nights, after everyone went to bed, I’d slip into the bathroom. You read that correctly, the bathroom. While there, I would sit on the floor next to the bathtub. In  time that tiny room became my prayer closet when the house was full.

On quieter days, I would lock myself in my bedroom and just pour out my heart to God. No fancy words or deep philosophical religious phrases. Just me, talking to my Father like He was sitting right there, because in my heart, I knew He was.

Over time, five minutes turned into fifty. Then fifty minutes turned into, some days, nearly three hours. Building an active and consistent prayer life didn’t happen all at once. It happened by working through the distractions and guess what? You can build the same strong prayer life.

Prayer Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

We hear the word “pray” thrown around constantly.

  • Life gets hard? Pray.
  • You’re worried? Pray.
  • You’re grieving? Don’t cry too long, just pray.

The question still remains, what does “pray” actually mean?

I’ll start by saying prayer is not reserved for pastors or people with a degree in fancy religious language.  Prayer is simply talking to God like a real person, the same way you’d talk to a close friend. With a close friend, you do not overthink conversations. It is simple. You greet them, say hello, and then the conversation begins. In the conversation you may share your feelings, ask for advice, or vent about your day. When you have these same conversations with God, that, my friend, is a form of prayer.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”

—Jeremiah 33:3

Why Communication With God Actually Matters

Before we get into why you can’t focus, I want you to understand why prayer works the way it does.

Communication brings togetherness. The more you talk to someone, the more you will understand who they are, how they think, and what matters to them. You build trust and intimacy. Your relationship with God is no different. The deeper it grows, the more whole you become. The more you’ll reflect the fruits of the Spirit, kindness, patience, love. In truth, You will just become a better human being.

Prayer is not only talking. It’s listening too. The more I prayed, the more sensitive I became to hearing God’s voice. It made sense, honestly, because the more you talk to someone, the higher the odds they’ll talk back.

Now, His voice wasn’t loud and thunderous like you’d see in a movie. It sounded more like:

  • • A gentle nudge in my spirit
  • • A quiet knowing that something was the right, or wrong, decision
  • • A vision or dream that gave direction, warning, or confirmation
  • • A “random” thought that turned out not to be so random
  • • Someone speaking on a subject I’d literally just prayed about, with no idea I had
  • • And of course, through His Word (The Bible)

Jesus said it plainly:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

—John 10:27

We learn His voice by talking to Him. That became my reality as I built a consistent prayer life. But I’ll be honest, none of this happened easily, or quickly. And what I’m about to share almost made me give up on ever having a real prayer life.

The Real Reason You Can’t Focus When You Pray

The part most people never talk about or may not even be aware of is you have an enemy who is working overtime to keep you from a deep relationship with God.

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

—1 Peter 5:8

He uses every tactic he can to disrupt your prayer life, and one of the biggest tactics of our generation is distraction. The moment you decide to pray, your brain suddenly remembers everything you forgot to do:

  • “Oh no, I didn’t wash the dishes.”
  • “I need to call my mom back.”
  • “Did I lock the car door?”

This used to completely derail me. It felt like my mind just would not settle down, and honestly, if you look it up, it’s one of the most common struggles believers search for help with. If you’ve ever felt like your emotions or racing thoughts take over the second you try to be still with God, you’re not alone either, I wrote a whole post on how to submit your emotions to God without suppressing them if that’s something you’re wrestling with too.

Three Strategies That Changed My Prayer Life

1. The Write-It-Down Method

Keep a notepad next to you before you pray, preferably not your phone. When a random thought pops up, jot it down and tell yourself, “I’ll handle this after prayer.” Your brain relaxes because it knows the thought is captured. Even if it’s not done yet, you don’t have to keep worrying about it.

2. The Pray-It-Through Method

This one changed everything for me. When a distraction comes, fold it into your prayer instead of fighting it.

  • Remembering the dishes? “Lord, thank You for providing food to dirty these dishes. Help me be a good steward of my home.”
  • Need to call someone? “Father, I lift up [that person] to You right now. Bless our conversation later.”
  • Worried about an errand? “God, give me wisdom and efficiency as I handle this task.”

Your brain feels like it’s already dealt with it, so you’re free to keep moving in prayer. Sometimes God will even start speaking on that very thing, because you brought it to Him.

3. Break the Wall

If you’ve ever had a strong, active prayer life, you know this feeling: there’s a “wall” of distracting, resistant thoughts, and on the other side of it is a flow state where prayer starts to feel effortless. The more you practice pushing through that wall, the faster you break it. What used to take you minutes will eventually take seconds. As a new believer, the only way through is practice, practice, practice. (If you’re new to your faith and still figuring out the basics, I broke down more of what to expect in 3 Things to Expect After You Get Saved as a New Believer.)

Consistency Beats Intensity

Your prayer discipline might look different than mine, but we all start somewhere. Start with five minutes. I know that sounds small, but five consistent minutes a day will take you further than one intense hour once a month.

As you push through the resistance, something beautiful happens: you start hearing God’s voice more clearly. What begins as you talking at God slowly becomes a real conversation, and real intimacy, with Him.

Prayer is just one of five spiritual disciplines I walk through in my book, Deep Roots, prayer, worship, reading Scripture, fasting, and community. If you want a deeper understanding of how to grow in your walk with God, you can grab your copy here.

Remember: sometimes the greater the resistance, the greater the breakthrough waiting on the other side.

As always…Until Next Time

Be strong. Be Courageous. Serve God Wholeheartedly.

P.S. – I didn’t have a strong prayer life overnight, and honestly, I sat on writing Deep Roots for years before I finally released it. If you’re in a season of feeling stuck, whether that’s in prayer or anywhere else in your walk with God, Deep Roots was written to meet you exactly there. Grab your copy here.
