There is an innate desire in humans to discover and walk out purpose here on earth. Without this discovery, naturally, we tend to feel lost and as if we are just wandering aimlessly in this world.  This is undeniably one of the most frustrating feelings in the world. Despite this deep desire of finding your God-given purpose, sometimes it’s difficult to understand how to uncover it. For many years, this was my story.

I lived a life that felt stuck on repeat.

  • Go to work
  • Pay bills
  • Attend school
  • Complete chores
  • Watch television
  • Hang out

only to it all over again the next day.

This routine had me feeling like a zombie. Stuck in a life that felt meaningless. One day, I got fed up. Filled with frustration and boredom I said to myself…

“There has to be more to life than this. This cannot be it”.

I was right. There was much, much more for me to do on this earth.

In retrospect, if I had the right information (like this book) and someone to point me in the right direction sooner, I may not have wasted those years aimlessly walking in circles. I could have very well discovered and lived purposely sooner.

Here is what I wish I knew about my God-given purpose.

Purpose Begins With God

God is the one who created every human walking this planet.  God is not the kind of God that just wakes up one day and sporadically does something. He is very strategic in all that He does, including creating life.

When God created you, it was with a plan in mind. Actually, scripture tells us before we existed even one day on this earth, God planned out every moment of our lives. Every moment!

You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.

-Psalms 139:16 (NLT)

For instance, my mom is a stellar businesswoman. For 20 years, I have watched her build an empire from the ground up. She has planned and walked her vision straight into reality.

What fascinates me is the way she knows every part of her business. She understands the logistics of inventory and product management like no other. This is not a surprise since she was the one that created that business.

No one knows a creation better than the creator.

The same is true for God. No one on earth knows you or me better than the one who created us.  Therefore, there is no one more qualified to direct and give clarity on our purpose.

We cannot pursue purpose without God. It is possible to become a success and help others, but not live out God’s original plan and purpose for our lives. The keys to finding your God-given purpose is to:

Purpose Should Not Create Pressure

Now that you know where to go to get answers concerning your purpose, it’s time to wait for those answers patiently. Emphasis on Patiently!

Walking into the reason you were placed on earth is an exciting task. Sometimes it’s easy to become obsessive about it. However, just like anything else in life, finding your God-given purpose is a process. As you build your relationship with God and continually search for answers in Him, clarity will come.

My first few years as a believer and my early 20’s was one big ball of confusion. I backslid for a long time (more about that here) and had no clear idea what I was meant to do on this earth. When I finally became serious about my journey, I was desperate to know my purpose.  I nagged God day in and day out enquiring about my purpose.

A few months passed and God began to direct and answer me on this. In retrospect,

I can clearly see how it would not have hurt to not be so hasty and enjoy the moments I was experiencing. I did not need to pressure myself and become anxious because God would reveal His plans for me in the fullness of time.

I just needed to stay close to God, seek and trust in the fullness of time God would reveal His plans concerning my life.

Purpose Requires Walking By Faith

When seeking your God-given purpose, I want you to know God will not give you all the answers at once. Sure, He will give you some direction, however, there will always be parts of the story that is a mystery.

God often does this to protect us from ourselves. Realistically speaking, if God gave us every detail of our purpose, many of us would be overwhelmed and afraid of the magnitude of it.  We would probably stick up our Baptist finger and exit stage left. Instead, God loves us enough to guide us step by step.  On the other hand, our responsibility is to move without understanding the full picture. A.K.A Walk by Faith.

For we live by faith, not by sight.

-2 Corinthians 5:7

As I waited for God to reveal my full purpose, I did not just sit down and do absolutely nothing. As I prayed, I took baby steps towards what I believed God placed in my heart. After taking those baby steps, God continued to lead me towards the next step.

Since each of us is different, these steps will look different. For you it can look like going to college, joining a ministry, exercising your creativity in a particular area, or unlocking your gifts and talents.

However, your journey looks, begin to move without fully understanding, and eventually, understanding will come.

Purpose Is Unfolding

Oftentimes, there is a belief that we were all created for one grand purpose then boom! It’s time to kick the bucket. However, for as long as we are breathing, purpose is constantly unfolding.

Your purpose can differ from season to season. In one season,

  • God may be calling you to be a mom and pour everything you have into your children.
  • In another season, you may be writing books.
  • In another season, you may be teaching and preaching around the world.
  • You may even do a few of these, simultaneously.

Ultimately, the only way to gauge and flow with the plans God has for us, we must remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit. He is our Helper, and He will guide us through the changing seasons of our lives.

I can go on about purpose forever, but I’ll stop right here for now.

Walking out your God-given purpose on earth is such a beautiful journey. Although is a process…enjoy the journey, wait on God, be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, and follow His direction. As you do this, chances are, you will look up to see how much you are progressively moving into the person God created you to be.

Until Next Time,

Be Strong, Be Courageous, Serve God Wholeheartedly
